Bond denied for 19-year-old arrested without incident by campus police
Bond was denied for a 19-year-old Jones College football player accused of killing a Jackson State University student on Sunday.
Joshua Brown, 19, of Columbia had his initial appearance in Hinds County Court on Friday, where Judge Johnnie McDaniels denied bond, saying Brown was a potential flight risk and a danger to the community.
“The court at this time finds that the defendant poses a clear and present danger,” McDaniels said.
Brown is accused of killing Jaylen Burns, 21, a JSU student from Chicago who was gunned down at University Pointe Apartments in Jackson on Sunday. Brown also is being charged with being in possession of a firearm on campus.
He is currently in the Raymond Detention Center.
Burns’ father, Jason Burns, told The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson his son was shot when he attempted to break up a fight.
Jaylen Burns’ family, including his father, mother and stepfather, sat in the front row of the courtroom for Friday’s hearing in Hinds County, WAPT TV reported.
“We pray that this will bring a sense of relief to the family, but we know the pain of our sorrow and of losing a loved one will take time,” said JSU Acting President Elayne Hayes-Anthony.
In a statement Thursday, a Jones College spokeswoman wrote, “Jones College remains committed to the safety and security of our campus community,” the document states. “We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure that our campus is a safe place for everyone.”
